A Connecticut man has created
an invention that can Get performance of 100 MPG from his Honda
Insight which is, a hybrid electric vehicle the company ceased
making in 2006.
The Honda vehicle had been assigned an EPA rating of 57 mpg.
The system designed by the Connecticut man which he calls a
Manual Integrated Motor Assist system allows the driver to assume
manual control over the vehicle's gas-to-electric ratio to receive
increased fuel mileage at an average 10-20% on Insights. He
claims to have sold to sixty Insight owners in the United States,
England and Australia who are now using the $750 system, and
that there is a waiting list. The same fellow also invented
a fifth wheel ? an electric wheel ? which drops down from the
trunk of the car and helps to generate electricity to power
the vehicle.
That invention, which he is not selling, allows his Honda to
run almost on electricity and can attain 180 MPG or more at
slow speeds on flat roads, he said. Mr. Dabrowski said he started
modifying his Honda Insight about four years ago because he
perceived the driver could do a better job of managing the ratio
between gas and electric which was designed to be controlled
automatically by the car's computer system. After all, he reasoned,
the computer can't see the hills or traffic conditions ahead
of it on the road. He said he doesn't expect the car industry
to ever manufacture pure electric cars because it would turn
the industry upside down, cut into oil company profits and have
an impact on the repair and maintenance business (electric cars
require less) and all the related industries that electric cars
would render obsolete

The shortcoming with his development is two fold – Presently
it only works on the one model and that electric hybrid, as
with all such, has a battery that needs to be replaced at great
expense about every seven years or so.
